3D Modeling For Free?!

I’ve been interested in the 3D editing, etc within the new Photoshop CS4 and I knew Google 3D Warehouse had lots of pre-created items that had been exported out as Collada (CAE) files which Photoshop can work with. Recently, I’ve also learned that it can work with Google Earth 4 (KMZ) files, which the free version of SketchUp 6 can export out as. That means I can take native SketchUp files other people have provided from the Warehouse, export them out and then work with them in Photoshop.  Total win situation.

Work is interested in creating a ‘community’ style scene that is interactive within Flash, and I know the warehouse has lots of buildings, would be interesting if I can make a nice little one street type neighborhood with a school, clinic, etc without having to hit Illustrator to create a more 2D styled file. Or maybe if i have time, I could just try and create my own buildings. Though, rendering more realistic tones and lighting would require something beyond the free version and possible plugins.

Thankfully, a website/group called Go 2 School has provided lots of nice learning tutorials on YouTube for SketchUp.

Will have try and cram in all these learning videos in with my free one month with Lynda.com. So much to learn, so little time.
