Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Web Skills
I’ll admit, my web skills that relate to search engine optimization are fairly weak. I can do keyword ranking and using alternate phrasing in text, plus making sure that the title tag is as descriptive a title as possible. That’s all internal, it’s the external things that I seem to have no true handle on.
External things :: Linking from other highly ranked sites to their own site.
Headway Corporate Resources is in the process of redesigning their web site and I’m having to make sure that it’s SEO compliant. The only downside is that I’m not the owner of the content on the site. So, I have to wait for the new content to come in. Once it does then I can look for the key words and phrases and try to suppliment them with alternates to help reach as broad a range of search engine users as possible. [Hmmm, I seem to be liking the 'as insert other phrase here as possible' phrase today.]
But how do you get honest/valid/true links from other sites to our own? One of the tips I’ve found is to have multiple blogs discussing potential topics relating to what Company XYZ does and having links back to them (the closer to the top of the content the better). Multiple blogs equals at minimum 3. Or getting press coverage on some exciting new event and having note worthy sites carry the item. For those of you who might be interested, Headway joined with Health Plan One to help individuals get the best price/quote on health insurance. This joint project makes sense of course, in that Headway places a lot of temporary workers, and who better to need some form of coverage when their job doesn’t provide benefits? Yet another way to try and improve search ranking.
Again it all breaks down on what rank the web site has that has a valid link back to your site. I can link to Headway all I want, it’s not really going to improve their search rank because mine is worse than theirs :).
But after all is said and done, it feels like you run into a wall eventually with no avenues left to explore. Is anyone out there willing to help discuss the latest case histories that Headway is producing to help drive more than just job seekers to the site, but potential clients as well? Only if you have a truly high ranking site, of course. ![]()
