pusillanimous: cowardly (adj)

Jeremy struggled against the tide, feeling the undertow pull at him, wanting to drag him down to the bottom of the sea. The sea wanted to conquer him; make him know who was king and victor in a realm he dared to invade. Jeremy was made of sterner stuff, however, and would not submit. He was not a pusillanimous young man, as his friends had taunted him with earlier that day. He would conquer his fear, one that had gripped him for years since the boating accident that took his parents.

Jeremy ultimately conquered his fear, but he would not be able to claim his victory that day, as he joined his parents in the briny deep.
