detritus: debris (noun)

The war was over and Emily sat down on the edge of the steps that led up to the capital building, a place that she once thought of as a silent sentry that would guard the city as a protector. The building no longer stood complete and was instead smoking charred detritus that littered the street just inches away from her feet. Their side had taken immense casualty, but they had won in the last moments. Her heart ached for all the loss that occurred that day, but she was also happy that victory had finally been granted to them.
